To run the forums, host the website, and travel, I charge a universal service fee for my reviews. This in-depth review was sponsored by BPM Imports. My goal is to be transparent and unbiased with you, this video and writeup are not meant to be an endorsement of BPM Imports products. I welcome your corrections, additions, and feedback in the comments below and the electric bike forums.

Pros:

  • A value priced yet full featured dual suspension fat tire electric bike driven by reliable brand name Bafang, Shimano, and Tektro electric and mechanical components, is at home commuting on the road or even off road on trails with it’s comfortable setup and zippy performance
  • Priced competitively at $1,695, this is a great value proposition since it features not only full suspension in the front and rear, but also a more powerful Bafang hub motor and a 48v battery system, most bikes with similar specs are priced at a higher point
  • The bike is comes in at about 75lbs and that weight includes the battery, motor, and everything on the bike ready to ride, if you wanted to shed some weight for carrying it around or loading it on and off a rack, you could always remove the battery and stow it somewhere else
  • The front suspension is a fat-tire specific Mozo spring suspension with 100mm of travel as well as compression adjust with lockout and preload adjust, overall, a somewhat standard suspension fork, but still quite comfortable and capable
  • In the rear, you get a Kind Shock rear adjustable coil shock, this is also a spring suspension but you can configure it quite easily to dial it in for your weight as well as ride style, this combined with the front suspension means you can get the perfect fit between the two
  • Tires on the bike are a set of Kenda Juggernaut fat-tires with knobby tread, these are 26” tall x 4” wide, so you really get that confident wide tire feeling, these are rated for 5-30psi, so you could really take that pressure down to get in on soft or loamy terrain like snow or sand, there are also some punched out rims to help save with weight but maintain rigidity
  • More and more people are commuting with fat-tire and full suspension bikes like this since they offer a lot of comfort even on the road bumps, this bike works well in this application since it does have fender provisions, adding fenders would be great for keeping clean both for off-road and on-road conditions
  • The bike comes with an independent disposable battery operated headlight, but the real star of the show is the rear light, this one is integrated into the main battery so you don’t have to worry about leaving it on or swapping out batteries all the time, also, it is an active brake light! As such, it will light up brighter when you actuate those brake handles, really a cool feature
  • Along with the fat tires and the front and rear suspension, I also found the saddle itself to be quite comfortable, it seems to be about 7” wide and is made of this nice plush material, it felt great for pedaling and for sitting, something some seats struggle with
  • Mechanically, the bike is operated by a 7 speed Shimano Tourney system with a 42 tooth chain ring in the front and a 14-28 tooth cassette in the rear, the Tourney is on the lower end of Shimano’s component range, however, they have been updating it over the years and it has worked out to be quite a formidable entry level derailluer
  • Way down by the derailleur, you will notice a metal derailleur guard, this is an accessory that not all bikes have, but it is here and important to highlight, this keeps the derailleur from getting bashed around if the bike is ever shipped, but more importantly, this will protect that derailleur should the bike ever take a spill and fall down, defiantly a great addition
  • Stopping the bike is a set of Tektro Aries mechanical disc brake rotors, this features a staggered setup of 180mm rotor in the front and a 160mm rotor in the back, having that larger rotor in the front is ideal since the brunt of the stopping force on a bike tends to hit the front wheel harder so it’s nice they set it up that way
  • This bike includes motor inhibitors, a motor cut off switch built into the brake handles making stopping easier, simply acetate the brake handle and power will be denied to the motor, this is a great feature for ebikes like this one and helps to make the stopping that much more immediate
  • The display is pretty normal and something you see on many other competing ebikes, I do like that it is large and easy to read, I should also mention that it has a walk mode feature which is great for walking the bike up a hill or carting it around with a flat tire, this comes in especially handy since it alleviates some of that 75lbs burden
  • It is also programable, in the display you can press the + and – button at the same time and it will allow you to configure aspects of the bike, for example, it starts at a top speed of 20mph, but I was able to program it to get it up to 25mph, very handy if you want to speed it up or dial it down for other riders
  • Driven by a powerful and reliable Bafang hub-motor, this is rated for 750 watts nominal and about 80nm of torque, so it is quite zippy for the application, I found it to be a lot of fun, especially with that top speed changed, it could really get up and go
  • Can be engaged either via the mechanical pedal system, or it has 5 levels of cadence based pedal assist, of course there is a throttle here too, so which ever way you want to propel the bike, it has you covered, I personally like to use the throttle to get up to speed then pedal at the higher speeds for fun
  • Powering the bike is a high-capacity 48v 14ah battery, with this voltage and amp hour rating, you should be able to go the distance with power available too, the battery is secured via 2 locks that are operated with one key, I should also mention there is a 10.4ah battery available if you want to save some money, either should be a good choice for a casual rider

Cons:

  • The center mounted kickstand can produce ‘pedal lock’’, pedal lock is an annoying occurrence that happens when you reverse a bike with the kickstand down, the crank rotates back and strikes the kickstand, causing the bike to lock up until you push it forward a bit and stow the kickstand back up
  • A lot of tires on modern ebikes these days have included puncture protection or a reflective sidewall stripe, both are great for safety and convenience and I really appreciate them, however, this bike has neither and is kind of a missed opportunity
  • I love the PSI rating on these larger tires, and lowering that PSI will give you more command over soft and loamy terrain such as sand or snow, however, one thing you have to be aware of is picnh-flats, AKA “snake bites”, these are flat tire punctures that occur when the rubber rubs against itself in a low pressure setting, so do be aware of that
  • The battery is not the easiest to get in and out, mostly due to the handle that is supplied, when pulling out, the handle can obstruct the sliding motion desired, and while going in, you will have to put the handle back down or it will block entry, minor gripe, but kind of annoying
  • One of the draw backs to this electrical system is that to operate the bike, the keys must stay in to maintain ignition, this means you could have the keys bounce around if on a key chain and not only make a lot of annoying noise while you ride, but even worse, they could potentially scratch up the frame, this is something to keep in mind for your operation
  • The display cannot be removed, this is a shame in certain situations, such as parking at a bike rack, not only will it advertise to would-be thieves that it is an electric bike by having a display on it, but it is also now subject to outside elements like rain or snow, I have seen many people park their bike with a similar display and they will sometimes put their helmet over it when leaving to alleviate both of these considerations
  • I love that you get lights in the front and rear, but it is annoying that the front light is not integrated to the main battery, this means you have to change out disposable batteries all the time to keep it powered, also annoying that you cannot control it from the display but rather, you have to turn it on and off manually, so this means you could potentially forget to do so when parking the bike, this would of course drain those disposable batteries more
  • Mechanical disc brakes are easy to maintain as well as adjust, however, they lack the immediate stopping power that hydraulic brakes offer, mechanical brakes are still quite capable, but they take a little bit more hand actuation compared to hydraulic brakes
  • A little something to consider, the seat post comes extra long on purpose so you can shave some off to get the right size for yourself, make sure you do so because if you put the seat too far down, it can collide and hit that rear suspension spring, something to keep in mind when sizing the bike for yourself
  • I think it is great it has fender provisions included, but it must be stated that you would still have to buy fenders separately, additionally, there are no rack provisions either which is a shame because both commuters and trails riders alike seem to make use of racks on bikes such as this

BPM F-35- X. I’m exited to see an ebike like mine reviewed on your fair and informative EBR website. I bought the F-35-MX 20″ wheel version because I am short and had estimated the stand over height to be acceptable for my 26″ inseam, and it is. I had not ridden anything with two wheels for nearly 30 years, so I had to start with baby steps, learning to ride and balance and pedal all over again.  The throttle was essential to get started at first and the convenience is welcome on every ride. A fast and powerful bike with a modern design full spring suspension UNDER $2K was a requirement for me. As I ride quickly over the trails the front ‘shock’ steadies the steering when going over holes, hitting sticks and rocks, the rear swing arm suspension is very effective at smoothing the ride with a single pivot. I chose the BPM model over another ADDMOTOR because of the 750W motor, with free shipping and a lower price. Because this is a virtual brand: I would suggest using the VELOFIX mobile service offered on BPM website.

Ebiking is my new hobby since August and my opinion is that the F-35-MX is the near perfect ebike for me as I ride on the local rail trails. I have met and talked with many cyclists who are interested in my new bike and are not put off by the fact it has a motor. EBR forum is loaded with fishy tommycod trolls who consistently and flippantly ‘dis’ this type of machine from a virtual company. Just watch my F-35-MX ‘afterburner’ tail light!

Thanks for sharing your experience with the 20″ version of this bike, I enjoyed reading it :) good tips about using VELOFIX. Sorry for the attitude that some people might have in the EBR forums, we do our best to keep it kind and safe there, but some people have strong opinions. Enjoy the ride, Mike!

Hi Court; my critique of EBR forum members and pioneers opinionated commentary was exaggerated, excuse me.

Ebikes are my interesting new hobby and witnessing the electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing technical advancement while prices drop is exciting. I will be looking for news about ebike popularity as gifts this year. I imagine there will be opportunities for many more good mobile ebike mechanics who can fix or rebuild these “green machines” by service call or working with a brick and mortar shop.

Does the display have backlit capability? If so how is it turned on?

Hi Kevin, this is Court answering! I didn’t cover the BPM Imports F-35X but am familiar with displays that look like the one it comes with. Usually, you just hold the up button for a couple of seconds (same way you activate the lights). Almost all LCD displays offer backlight… another possibility is tapping the power button quickly while the bike is already on. And since we’re discussing extras, usually you can hold the down arrow to activate walk mode and hold up and down simultaneously to get to the settings menu ;)

Is it possible to de-restrict this bike?

Hi Kai! Great question, I have no clue… Perhaps you can ask in the forum area here, or contact the company directly? Where did you buy from, or are you still in the consideration/research phase?

Ok, going on 60 days and two things stand out. The controller is in an area (pedal area) that is not water proof. Water entered and three wires fried together. Easy fix IF you know what you are doing. Secondly, brake light came off in a crash which essentially shut down the motor – either exposed wires touching or open circuit. Either way, not good. Electronics should be dummied down to forego brake light (which is basically useless on single trail during the day). Let me know when you find an easy solution! Lastly, the brakes… replace with hydraulic! 75lb bike with 200lb rider trying to stop is ridiculous! Magura Trek 4/2 piston was my choice. I ride 50-60 miles a week, 80% trails and in hindsight, would have spent a tad bit more for more reliability.

Awesome! This was so helpful, Jeff. Thanks for explaining what has needed attention and how you’ve addressed failure points. It’s so fun to hear from someone who has been hands on and pushed products like this. I hope it either continues well, or that you purchase another product and provide similar feedback as a comparison :D

I got my bike shipped to me. Damaged during shipping or original assembly. When I pulled it out of the box the battery and and mount for it fell off. The threads that are part if the bike frame were stripped and will not hold the screw. I have called them and told me how to fix it. But I don’t want to fix it. It was over $2,500 and I want a new replacement or a refund. They will not respond to my requests. If it was only a screw, no problem but its the frame threads that are damaged.

Hi Marques, that really sucks. I can relate to having buyers remorse when getting such an expensive, heavy, and unusable products… or one that just doesn’t feel new or correct. I’m so sorry to hear about the messed up threads and the company not stepping up more to help. This is definitely one of the risks for buying an online ebike, and especially from a lesser known company. It’s hard for them to get a start, but also to maintain a good reputation. I’m sorry man, but I hope that your comment helps others, and I hope you can find a friend or shop that has the tools and skills to at least make it rideable so you can enjoy or resell it so it doesn’t just go to waste.
