Hi Guys
one months ago i brought a BH EVO CROSS 2017bike started off great then now surges and have to turn off and back on at least 8 times on a 19 km ride.
great start to me getting into biking do all BH's suck ?
my local bike shop said not to bring into next year and cant say what is wrong any tips ?
Thanks
Jonathon- I have had the surges from time to time (on Evo Jet), however, I would turn the system off and also wipe down the dirty inside of the torque sensor. That would usually do the trick. In some instances, I would have to shutdown a second time. I also noticed it could trigger the system with surges when I am on very rough or bumpy terrain with excessive chain slap. I know, the bugs really suck sometimes...

Hello Gil.

If the display needs to be replaced on a 2017, isn't it still covered under warranty? I don't know if a US dealer will ship a North American spec part to NZ, but this dealer has carried BH bikes, parts and accessories for many years here in the US. It can't hurt to ask.

http://www.electriccyclery.com/shop/parts/electric_bike_parts/electric-bicycles-easy-motion-neo-neo-parts/evo-atom-console/

You could possibly help the knowledge base here on the forum by listing why the display needs replacing. Good luck.
Many thanks for your suggestion , I will follow it up . I dropped the display on concrete and broke the screen.

Hey @Jonathon, we are a large Easy Motion dealer and here are a couple things you want to check out to correct the issue you are having:

- When you say surging I presume that the system doesn't shut down but rather that the bike moves forward on its own, is jerky or doesn't feel as responsive as it did when it was new? If yes, then there are a couple of things you should check out.

1 - Make sure your rear wheel is properly tightened but not overly tight. If you check and it's very tight and you have taken the rear wheel out since you got it, then loosen it slightly (still making sure it's tight though). Overtightening the rear wheel can cause stresses on the torque sensor.
2 - Ensure the torque sensor is clean. The inspection over on the 2017 models are located in the inside area of the derailleur hanger / sensor plate (black or silver aluminum color piece) If you notice the area has a lot of dirt / oil then it's time for a cleaning. Only use a "Safe For Plastics" electronics contact cleaner to clean this area.

- If you are experiencing an issue with the system shutting down on you, there are two areas to check.

1- Make sure that the contacts between the display and the base are clean. Once again you can use a "Safe For Plastics" electronics contact cleaner to clean this area or rubbing alcohol for this.

2- The 2 larger tabs where the battery connects to the frame may not be making proper contact. Inspect these 2 larger tabs for any evidence or arching. If there is this means that there is an issue with not having a proper electrical connection. To correct this, you will need to bend the tabs outwards slightly 1/16" and you need to be gentle. Also, you MUST never use any metal object to bend the tabs. I like to use a plastic tire lever.

Your Easy Motion bike comes with a 5 year warranty so I always suggest that you have a dealer doe this work for you if there is one close by.

hope this helps,

Will

Thanks Will for your input. I have had to 'exercise' the contacts behind the display panel with a hollow end of a pencil due to errors and sticking (perhaps they are not protruded completely). I have also had to tighten the mounting plate attached to the handlebar to resolve as well.

I am also receiving (lately) error code 14 while riding. The manual states the 'The user pushed the pedal during starting process' causing the system to get a false reading. I always make sure I do not push down pedals during startup.

Would you happen to have any info on the possible resolution for this error code? Thanks!

@bob armani this is probaly due to the torque sensor needing a cleaning. Try cleaning it and that should resolve the issue.

All the best,

Will-FYI-Looks like Gil is looking for 'the new portrait style ie 3” high 2” wide' display. I think that may be the the one that is the center mount and not the side mounted version if I am correct??
@bob armani argggg you are probably correct I jumped the gun on that one. Thanks for letting me know.

@Gil sorry for possibly misunderstanding your question. If it is indeed the center mounted display systems then we currently do not have these. If I recall from previous chats last year with Easy Motion I think this upgrade required a new controller and certainly the display, base, and cabling.

Thanks Will. I'll try the cleaning fluid you have recommended. Now I have to find it...

@bob armani any electronics parts shop (Radio Shack type places etc....) would have it as well. Make sure you get the one without any silicones in it and make sure it's safe for plastics and circuit boards.

all the best,

Will

Will-I think you are correct about needing a new controller if converting from the side mount to the center display. The center mount gives you more info within the system such as battery health, etc. I also spoke to an EM tech at the Expo and he concurred...

Gil- 20000 km is remarkable! Are all 6 bikes 2017 Evo Pro 27.5? I really like that model by EM with all of the upgrades they have made from previous models. I have my radar on a couple for sale in my area, but have not decided. Still researching more.

How do you like the performance of your bike overall? Is the 500 watt motor very zippy off the line? Thanks!

Hi Bob, all our bikes have been Evo 27.5 , purchased the first 2 in 2012 (when my wife and I turn 70) ,upgraded in 2014 and again last year to the Pro because of battery capacity. Really liked our 2014 bikes but most of our riding is off road and we need to be sure of getting home , gravel eats battery. We have all the power we need ,unfortunately we are restricted to 25km on top speed but due to the type of riding we do speed is not an issue. We like the Pro it has all the power for the hills we need. Cheers Gil

Thanks Gil- Wow keep riding!! I am on my very first ebike myself. The availability for ebikes was very limited in 2012 here in the USA. Sounds like a winner. My Evo Jet has served me well, so my thinking is that I'll stick with the same brand for now. Appreciate your input!:)

Hello Tony- Just curious if you got all of the kinks worked out of your Evo Jet?? Ride safe
Sorry I didn't see this until just now. The motor was fixed as previously mentioned. When I contacted Crazy Lenny about the display, their tech staff was baffled and said I would have to bring it in for them to see what's going on. That's not happening since they're in Wisconsin and I'm in NYC. It's not a big deal, the speedo numbers are a little off so I've just been using it as-is. It doesn't affect the function of the bike otherwise I would've raised hell. I contacted BH recently to see what they know about this issue but it's right at the edge of my warranty at this point so I doubt they'll honor anything.

Thanks Tony for the followup-Wow I just contacted them regarding my display contacts sticking. I just went ahead and swapped it out for the PRO center display as an upgrade. Prior to this, I was receiving error codes 14, 5, and 13s. I thought this would do the trick, however, the errors have returned after a few rides. Perhaps I need to purchase the torque sensor cleaning spray suggested by Will from Scootertti and start there. Have you done any upgrades to your Evo Jet? Any error codes received recently? Just curious.

Hi Bob,

Wondering if the new display is better in any way for riding? Can the new display lower assist below the 30% the original does? I would like to lower it to 20%. I have the Bluetooth module and app, that was to be the solution, but none of us with that have had great success.

As for your error codes, I have cleaned the torque sensor several times. Mostly because when dirty it gives me too much assist and speed. I know some would think that a good thing, but I do ride some long distances and try to keep the speed to ~16 or so. I've never gotten error codes due to the dirty torque sensor though. I did have to replace the controller under warranty, easy DIY. BH sent it to me, I posted about it somewhere here. Replaced due to error code 05, at 9 months old. BH was amazing with the whole process. If you'd like to have a private conversation about that feel free.

Hi JR-Thanks so much. I will PM you regarding this issue with the errors I have been receiving.

I just checked the new PRO display and the increments are as follows for PAS: 0, 30, 50, 70 & 100%. I do not believe there is any way to adjust those presets. I do know that the preset PAS levels are done at the factory at the max setting of high. The available settings are low, medium and high within the software diagnostics.
I was also considering the Bluetooth module that Joe Marcoux from EM exhibited on YT, however, I liked the functionality of the PRO upgrade and opted for that. I do notice on startup now, that the software version blinks @ 1.1. With the old side mount, it was @ 3.1.
I now have 2 sets of 5 contacts with the new display. One set for the control pad, and one set for the center mount that are set on springs like the older version. Still researching exiting error codes.
