First Ride of 2021

Pathetic, I know. But we had some extenuating circumstances.

We had become daily riders since we replaced our 10 year old Pedegos starting in February of 2020. It was the high point of our day to ride, whether going to the bank or market, or just taking a recreational ride. Helped us keep our sanity during periods of lock-down, and our health.

But that all changed last Veteran's Day when a momentary lapse of concentration resulted in my wife taking a bad spill. A trip to the ER found that she had a comminuted fracture (2 actually) of her right elbow, and a broken clavicle.

While the clavicle would heal on its own, the elbow had fractured right in the area where the tendons are attached and required surgery. It took about 4 weeks for the road rash to heal enough in the proposed incision area for the surgery to happen, which was about December 11th.

Now, 4 weeks post surgery, the pain was down and the function was up to the point where she wanted to get back on the bikes! I prepared our least intimidating bike for her (R1U 700 step-thru), keeping the tire inflation at the low end and softening up the front fork to try and minimize road roughness for her still-healing elbow. We went out on a little, gentle 5 miler on a beautiful day and it truly brought back how much we love being out on our e-bikes. And she even wore her elbow pads from her skateboard protection gear.

I had ridden a little bit since her accident, first a couple of times a week, then once a week, and then none at all. Her accident reminded me how much I enjoy her company while out riding.

Anyway, that is our little story and today's success. Be careful out there! All it takes is a momentary lapse of concentration for some big hurt to happen!
