Surface 604 brakes... how are yours?

So, I had a local bike shop set up my bike when it arrived and go over it. It was a good thing as they found a few things and fixed one or two that would have been a challenge for me.

That said the brakes feel a little weak to me. They were adjusted to have the best brake and still release so they don't drag, but I can pull the levers to the bar and still I can push the bike. I am hoping they improve as the pads bed in.

Has anyone else had issues with the brakes?

What did you do about it?

After about 300 kilometers (185 miles), my primary concern with the brakes has been the noise, not the performance. Bottom line: I think it depends on the kind of riding that you do... the brakes are more than adequate for my touring and light trail riding up to 25 kph or so, but if I was doing more high speed or downhill riding, I would probably change them out immediately. My plan is to upgrade to Avid BB7's down the road, but it isn't a priority. I'm more concerned with shifting upgrade uptions and the limitations imposed by the 7 speed. Good luck and please let us know how you make out!

Yes they are a bit noisy, but they seem to work well enough. Not bad enough for me to warrant changing them yet. I plan to run the current pads out, and then swap the entire system to Avid BB7 as well if possible.

One thing I'm unsure of is with our brake levers and the engine cutoff. I'm no electrician so I'm unsure of how much of the brake system is interconnected but from my observations, it appears that just the lever needs the cutoff function, we can still change the brake and rotor itself.

I wonder if there are lever upgrades for us and how specific they need to be for an electric with the cutoff function. Note there is that extra wire coming out.

I asked Surface 604 upgrade options, and was told that while shifter/derailleur options are limited, they would be posting Tektro hydraulic brakes as an upgrade option next month. No price was mentioned though.
