Summary

  • The Model S is made right here in America, with real attention to detail. Every bike is put together by a dedicated mechanic from start to finish, so you know you're getting something solid and well-built. It's a bike made to last, and that’s pretty rare these days.
  • One of the best things about the Model S is how you can make it your own. From a six-step paint process that gives your bike a durable, custom look, to choices like handlebars, seats, and grips, it’s all about tailoring the bike to your style. Even the wheels and wood accents are made in-house to match whatever look you're going for.
  • The Model S is designed to last, especially in tough environments like coastal areas where salt and humidity can really wear down a bike. With all non-corrosive bolts and fittings, it’s built to handle those harsh conditions without rusting or falling apart, so you can ride worry-free no matter where you live.
  • When you get the Model S, it's ready to go right out of the box—no assembly required. Once you're on it, the bike feels super stable and comfortable, making for a really smooth ride whether you're cruising around town or commuting. It's all about convenience and comfort in one solid package.

Written Review

Electric Bike Company, renowned for its U.S.-built e-bikes and wide-ranging customization options, is back with the Model S, a sleek electric cruiser designed for cruising around town and relaxed weekend rides. It’s clear from the start that the focus here is on smooth handling, comfort, and durability, all while offering an impressive level of personalization that allows riders to tailor the bike to their exact needs.

Right out of the box, with nearly everything pre-assembled with only minor adjustments needed, the Model S arrives nearly ready to ride (including the correct PSI in the tires). With its thoughtfully tuned 750W motor and an upright riding position, the bike is built for both convenience and comfort, making it a strong contender in the electric cruiser market.

My Experience Riding The Electric Bike Company Model S E-Bike

Electric Bike Company Model S fork

On my first ride with the Model S, I was struck by how smooth and comfortable it felt right out of the gate. The 2.35-inch tires, combined with the suspension fork upgrade we opted for (though it usually comes with a rigid fork), definitely made a difference on bumpy roads and gravel paths. You can get this bike with either 24-inch or 26-inch wheels, and that choice impacts the overall fit and geometry, meaning it’s designed to work for riders anywhere from 5 feet to a towering 6’10”.

The step-through frame is a huge win for easy on-and-off, especially for a heavier bike like this. I wasn’t sure how it would handle, but I was pleasantly surprised—it’s stable without feeling sluggish. Everything in the cockpit is within easy reach and laid out simply, which I appreciate when cruising around in an upright, relaxed position.

I’m 5’11” and felt like the bike was dialed in for me, though there’s definitely some wiggle room in either direction for shorter or taller riders. EBC says it’ll work for people up to 6’10”, which I can’t personally vouch for, but the adjustable components make me think it’s not a stretch.

The seat, though, was a bit of a mixed bag. We tried the back-supported version, and while it was comfortable overall, the backrest felt just a little too far back for ideal pedaling posture. It’s not a dealbreaker—especially since EBC lets you choose from different seat styles—but something to keep in mind if you like a more traditional riding position.

All in all, the Model S does exactly what you want a cruiser to do: it’s comfortable, smooth, and a blast to ride. I can see myself taking this on plenty of long, easy rides without hesitation.

Range

Estimated Range (from EBC): Up to 60 Miles on the Standard battery

Electric Bike Company Model S taillight

When it comes to range on the Model S, you’ve got some serious options depending on how far you plan to go and how much you want to spend. The standard battery is a 14Ah unit with 672Wh of juice, which EBC says should get you about 60 miles on a charge. Not bad for casual riders or short commutes or even potentially, your weekly commute.

But if you’re the type who wants more freedom, there are some tempting upgrades. For an extra $499, you can bump up to an 18Ah battery, which boosts your range to about 100 miles. If that’s still not enough, you can go all-in with the 18Ah battery plus a 9Ah basket battery for $1,098, giving you a total of 1,008Wh and an estimated range of 140 miles. And for the true long-haulers, there’s the dual 18Ah setup at $1,298, packing a massive 1,440Wh and pushing your range to around 200 miles.

For me, the range flexibility is a big plus. Whether you’re just cruising around town or planning a longer adventure, you can tailor the battery setup to fit your needs. And with the PAS and torque sensor options, you’ve got control over how much power you get and how efficiently you ride.

Power (Motor & Battery)

Electric Bike Company Model S motor

At the core of the Model S is a rear hub motor that packs a punch, with a 500W nominal rating and the ability to peak at 750W when you need that extra burst of power. Whether you’re cruising flat roads or tackling inclines, the motor is tuned to deliver a smooth, responsive ride. It’s plenty capable for daily commuting or leisurely rides, but with that extra power on tap, you’ve got more than enough to handle tougher terrain or longer hauls.

One feature I really like is the built-in throttle, which comes in two options—push or twist, depending on your preference. This makes it easy to get a quick boost without pedaling, perfect for when you need to get off the line fast or just want to take a break from pedaling altogether. The choice between the push or twist throttle is a nice touch, letting you pick what feels most natural to your riding style.

The Model S is also equipped with a cadence sensor as standard, which gives you instant power as soon as the pedals start turning. But for those looking for a more intuitive ride experience, there’s an optional torque sensor upgrade. With the torque sensor, the motor responds to how hard you’re pedaling, giving you a smoother, more controlled power delivery. It’s a great option for those who want a ride that feels more in tune with their effort, and it can help stretch your range a bit further by being more efficient with the motor’s power.

The combination of motor power, throttle options, and sensor flexibility makes the Model S feel adaptable to different riding styles. Whether you’re after raw power or a more refined, efficient ride, this setup has you covered.

Components

Electric Bike Company Model S tire

The components on the Model S are just as customizable and varied as you’d expect from Electric Bike Company, a brand known for making bikes that feel uniquely yours. From the front to back, you can tweak nearly every part of this bike to fit your style and needs.

One standout feature is EBC’s in-house custom wheel shop, where they build, true, and even paint the wheels to match your style. This level of attention to detail isn’t something you see every day, and it’s a big part of what makes their bikes so personal.

The Model S we tested came with a single-speed drivetrain—simple, low-maintenance, and perfect for the relaxed cruising this bike was made for. It’s equipped with a 56T chainring, a stainless steel chain, and a 18T freewheel, which works great for flat, easy rides. There’s no need to fuss with shifting gears here, which also means fewer parts to maintain. But if you prefer the flexibility of a few gears, EBC offers a 7-speed option with a 14-28T rear cassette that gives you more range, especially useful for hilly areas.

Braking is handled by solid Tektro Dorado 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors. Coming from a brand like Tektro, these brakes are backed by a great reputation and are considered common by nearly any bike mechanic so no worries about maintenance. In my time riding the Model S, the brakes feel confident, controlled and easy to articulate.

EBC also gives you plenty of options when it comes to contact points like the seat, grips, and pedals. Since these are highly personal choices based on comfort and style, being able to pick exactly what works for you is a nice touch.

Another perk of buying from EBC is knowing that the bikes are painted, assembled, and inspected right at their California headquarters. If you ever run into an issue with your bike, they can track down the specific builder who worked on it to help solve the problem. That kind of personalized support is rare, and it’s a big plus.

Overall, the components on the Model S strike a balance between simplicity and customization. EBC gives you a great foundation and then lets you tailor the rest, ensuring the bike fits your exact needs without overcomplicating things.

Screen / User Interface / App

Electric Bike Company Model S display

The Electric Bike Company Model S comes equipped with a centrally mounted, full-color display that gives you all the ride information you need in a clean, easy-to-read layout. It’s the kind of display that keeps things simple but still covers the essentials like:

  • Current speed
  • Ride time
  • Pedal Assist System (PAS) level
  • Battery level
  • Ambient temperature
  • Odometer reading

Currently, EBC doesn’t offer a phone app to pair with the Model S or the rest of their bikes, but honestly, it doesn’t feel like a big deal. The display puts everything right in front of you—speed, battery life, and PAS level—so you’re not left guessing while you ride.

Electric Bike Company Model S Model Options

The Electric Bike Company has built its reputation around offering an extensive range of customization options, and the Model S is no exception. Right from the start, you’re given the chance to tailor nearly every aspect of the bike, from aesthetics to performance features, ensuring your ride is truly unique to you. If I’m being honest, it can get a little overwhelming at first, but, go step by step and you can truly build the bike of your dreams.

One of the highlights is their six-step painting process. They start by thoroughly cleaning the frame before applying a primer layer. Then, two coats of your chosen color are applied, followed by two clear coats to lock in the finish and give it a durable, glossy shine. This process gave my bike a deep glossy paint job that seems like it should last quite a while.

When it comes to practical features, the Model S offers a variety of storage solutions, like front baskets and rear racks that are MIK-compatible for easy accessory attachments. If you’re planning to bring your surfboard along, there’s even a dedicated rack option. Safety-conscious riders will appreciate the additional lighting features, including a front light mounted on the basket, brake-activated rear lights, and turn signals for better visibility on the road.

Comfort is a key focus for the Model S, with a range of upgrades available. You can add a suspension seat post for extra cushioning on bumpy rides, choose between leather or rubber grips, and even opt for a back-supported saddle. Want to take it a step further? You can even select a custom helmet that matches your bike’s color scheme.

EBC gives you the flexibility to make the Model S your own with nearly endless possibilities. Handlebar choices range from classic cruiser bars to BMX riser styles, and you can even color-coordinate the tires to match the frame. For those worried about security, there are anti-theft options, including locks and tracking devices, as well as on-the-go repair kits.

What’s really cool is that when you order a Model S, you’re not just getting a bike off the shelf. EBC builds each one based on your specific selections. While they do offer some pre-configured, ‘grab-and-go’ models, the true appeal is in creating a bike that’s uniquely yours from the ground up. Just keep in mind that with all these customizations, the bike’s weight can add up quickly—but if you’re going for style and comfort, that’s a small trade-off.

Is The Electric Bike Company Model S Worth Buying?

If you’re after a well-built electric cruiser with endless customization, the Model S is tough to beat. Made in America, with top-quality craftsmanship, it’s clear that every detail gets attention—from the custom paint and wheels to the handcrafted wood accents. Having a dedicated mechanic build your bike from start to finish really shows how solid and well-finished the Model S feels, and highlights the focus on quality by the brand.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind, though. The website can be a little overwhelming with all the similar-looking cruisers and tons of options. Plus, the bike has some heft to it, but that’s to be expected with such a durable build.

Pros

  • Endless Customization: You can pick and choose nearly every part and what color its painted.
  • Made in the USA and delivered Fully delivered, no mess, no hassle.
  • Beach Ready: Aircraft grade hardware that is non-corrosive, perfect for beach environments.
  • Between 60 and 200 miles of range (depending on battery choice).
  • Nice low standover height of just 18 inches, makes getting on and off much easier.

Cons

  • While I appreciate the build quality and solid construction, the Model S can be a bit hefty, something to consider if you plan on moving or lifting the bike often.

All in all, the Model S offers a great mix of style, comfort, and reliability. If you want a bike that’s built to last and reflects your personal style, with the bonus of being made right here in the U.S., the Model S is a great pick. It’s definitely worth considering if you’re after a smooth, customizable cruiser that’ll turn heads and ride like a dream.
